Forged Earrings in Sterling Silver

These earrings were forged by hand, shaping the metal with heavy hammers designed to really move the metal. The simple but elegant piece were originally a piece of 2mm square wire. It was thinned and shaped but still maintained volume, unlike a piece made from thin hammered wire. This also makes the metal incredibly strong and it is also very environmentally friendly, as very little metal is wasted (just a final filing and polishing, where the metal dust is carefully collected for recycling) and no harsh chemicals are used in the process.

The design was inspired by ancient brooches called fibula. More specifically, Cyprian "hand" fibula, forged in the 8th century BC. Those pins were probably made in the same way I made these (although modern hammers are better balanced and polished, which I am very thankful for!). This makes me feel a link to those old craftsmen and a great respect for all of us, throughout the ages.

Someone please contact me about making them a true fibula - I love the ancient history in them!

This piece is made completely by hand and small variations are to be expected.
